If you are wanting to move up the ladder in your company, there are several steps you can take to increase your chances. One of the most basic things you can do is to have an honest, positive attitude as you do your job each day. People will grumble and complain or procrastinate on job tasks draw negative attention from management and are not quick to promote. If you do your work with a good attitude and are positive, you will get a much better reception when you apply for a higher position. Helping with this is the willingness to do jobs that other people are not so anxious to do. For example, if you volunteer to write a report or do a task that is generally unpopular you will have a step up when being considered for advancement later on.
Your appearance and behavior also play a huge role in your ability to move up to a new position. Workers that are punctual, turn in assignments on time and dress appropriately for the job show that they are serious about what they do and have a go getter attitude. This is the type of individual that often is chosen for an administrative job. You can still achieve this if you are unable to complete an assignment on time or have other instances were you have to be late. If you are consistent in informing your boss beforehand, you can show respect and maturity by being responsible for your own actions.
Another way to make your chances greater is to pursue further education. Those who go after a master’s degree or get additional training in their field tend to stand out from the rest of the applicants for a higher position. The extra training you pick up may be the one defining factor between you and someone else.
