Homeland Security Bachelor’s Degree Programs

Bachelor’s degree programs in homeland security qualify graduates for positions in local, state and federal agencies or to work in the private sector. A homeland security degree can also prepare a student for graduate study in law, criminal justice, public administration, or political science. Bachelor’s programs in homeland security are available online and in a traditional on-campus format.

Students enrolled in the bachelor’s degree program in Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University learn about topics such as emergency management, counterintelligence and strategic planning. There are two tracks available to homeland security majors; a standard track and a cyber security track. The core curriculum for homeland security majors includes courses in risk analysis, intelligence systems, and homeland security technology.

Thomas Edison State College offers an online bachelor’s degree in homeland security and emergency preparedness. Prospective students who have completed maritime or Coast Guard training may be able to apply credits from that training towards the homeland security degree. The curriculum in the bachelor’s degree program covers topics such as terrorism and disaster response. Students can select from electives including port security, strategic planning, and the psychology of terrorism.

Virginia Commonwealth University offers a bachelor of arts in homeland security and emergency preparedness. In addition to meeting general education requirements, students in the major are required to take 30 credits of core courses. These include U.S. government, emergency planning, and constitutional issues in homeland security. Electives are chosen from subjects such as forensic science, U.S. foreign policy and incident investigation.

Students enrolled in the online bachelor’s program in homeland security at American Public University complete a series of core courses including emergency planning, homeland defense, and emergency response to terrorism. They also select from electives in areas such as cyberwarfare and hazardous materials management. Graduation requirements also include general education courses in math, science and the humanities, and a senior seminar in homeland security.
